GRAND KIDS
"GRAND KIDS" is an initiative of the Foster
Grandparent Program of Central Florida and is designed to pair Foster Grandparents with children who are reading below grade level. The program is implemented through a partnership with Elementary Schools throughout Central Florida. The success of the initiative is attributed to the intensity and consistency of the program.
Each child selected to participate in the program
receives approximately 30 minutes each day of one- to-one reading practice with a Foster Grandparent using reading materials selected and provided by the teacher. At the end of 3 months, the reading skills of the child are assessed by the school to determine the progress that has been made. If the child has not made significant progress, he or she continues to be a "GRAND KID."
Children participating in the program receive
incentives such as books, cards, tickets to events, and special recognition from the Foster Grandparent with whom they work. And of course, they form a valuable inter-generational relationship with the Foster Grandparent.
