The Foster Grandparent Program connects limited-income volunteers age 55 and over with children and young people with special needs. Volunteers receive an hourly stipend and other great benefits.
As a Foster Grandparent, you're a role model, a mentor, and a friend. Serving children/youth at local organizations--including faith-based groups, Head Start Centers, schools, and other youth facilities--you help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, you give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future.
Foster Grandparents serve up to 30 hours per week. Some volunteers may qualify to earn a tax-free, hourly stipend. With Foster Grandparents, you'll receive pre-service orientation, training from the organization where you serve, and supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty.
When you share your love, time, and experience, you have the power to help a child who needs you. If you're at least 55 and want to share your experience and compassion, you have what it takes to be a Foster Grandparent.

The O.T.T.E.R. (Older Teachers Training Early Readers) Program is an intergenerational initiative whose goals are to improve reading readiness in preschoolers across Orange and Seminole Counties, provide older volunteers meaningful life enriching volunteer opportunities, promote intergenerational relationships, and acceptance of cultural diversity. OTTER recruits volunteers over the age of 50 to work with four-year-old children in preschool programs.
The volunteers are trained in child development, cultural consciousness, early childhood literacy, reading aloud techniques, the curriculum, and other areas as needed. OTTER volunteers spend approximately 2 hours per week with their assigned children. Time is spent one-on-one with children identified as in need of extra help with literacy skills. In addition, volunteers may work with children in small groups.
